If you need a space-age lift to get to your job, check out our list of the best space jobs available in Sydney.
In Sydney, you could be one of the first in the world to be offered a space career.
But not everyone can afford to go to the city to join a private space company, and the vast majority of jobs in Sydney’s booming tech sector are still at the whim of the government.
“The fact that a lot of our tech jobs are at government discretion, they’re just not available to people who are in Sydney,” said Dr Richard Hogg, who chairs the National Academy of Sciences Space and Technology Advisory Group.
He told ABC Radio Sydney’s Today program on Monday that the Government should change its rules so people can choose their career and have access to the opportunities.
Dr Hogg said many of the jobs that were available to the most qualified Australians were not at government expense.
For example, a young person who was looking to do a STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) or a young worker looking to become a software engineer, would have to pay a minimum of $120,000 for a job in a government funded tech centre, whereas a younger person with the same qualifications would pay less than $40,000, he said.
And if you’re looking to work in a high-tech startup, a minimum salary would be $160,000 per year for a position in a startup, and a starting salary of $60,000 would be required for a tech startup, according to the Academy’s website.
Mr Hogg also said the government’s decision to scrap the HECS (Hands-on Education and Skills) certificate program was a mistake.
“[The Government] has just been completely ignorant of what is happening with this and it’s a huge failure, which I think is just plain irresponsible,” he said, adding that the government needed to put in place an education program for people who needed to gain the skills needed to work for a company in the future.
Professor Stephen Hall, an associate professor at the University of Sydney, said there was a need to ensure that graduates were well prepared to move on.
We need to make sure that graduates are able to apply for positions in a timely manner so they are ready to go back into the workforce,” he told ABC Sydney’s Sunrise program on Tuesday.
As well as the Government’s decision, there is a growing awareness among students of the challenges that could arise from not having access to an education or career in tech.
According to the Australian National University’s Australian Institute of Technology (AIOT), up to 20 per cent of graduates are unemployed.
The AIOT’s survey of 20,000 graduates across 18 universities found that the biggest barriers to employment in tech were lack of experience, a lack of training, and having to take time off work to look for work.
It also found that one in five graduates who had taken up an apprenticeship were either unemployed or had moved out of the country for work, with another 15 per cent having to wait longer than one year to find work.
So what does it take to become an engineer in space? “
We’re just really lucky to have a workforce, but it’s also really hard to be a young student or a mid-career employee and to get experience and then be able to find a job when you’re out there,” he explained.
So what does it take to become an engineer in space?
For a start, there are three essential requirements to become one of Australia’s first engineers in space.
You have to be 21 years old or over, have a Bachelor’s degree or higher, and have the right to live and work in Sydney, or anywhere else in Australia.
Also, you need to have the following: 1) a Bachelor of Science in engineering from a state or territory that allows you to practise in space 2) a master’s degree in engineering, including at a university or college 3) at least three years of relevant experience in the field of space technology.
Once you’ve met all three of these criteria, you’ll have to apply to the Government to apply your degree, which will take around two years.

Other areas where you can apply to be an engineer are: You can apply if you have the skills required for an engineer position, and also if you want to work on space projects, such as the ISS or a spacecraft.
An application form for this position can be downloaded from the Government website.
But if you don’t meet all three criteria, then
