Mechanical engineers are increasingly likely to be paid significantly less than engineers in the rest of the business, according to a new report.
Mechanical engineers make up nearly half of the US workforce, but the proportion of them who earn between $60,000 and $130,000 per year is about twice that of other occupations.
This trend is a major issue for those who are considering a career in the industry, as employers may see an increase in demand for skilled engineers.
“It’s a really important issue for employers,” says James Pappas, a mechanical engineering professor at Indiana University and the author of the new study.
“They are going to want a certain skill set.”
Mechanical engineers earn $50,000 to $60.7m per year, but that figure includes commissions and bonuses paid to those who work in the engineering field.
“You might be paying someone in the $70,000 range who’s only there for a couple of years, but then they’re getting paid a lot more for a very long time,” says Pappa.
This can result in engineers earning as little as $15,000 or as much as $60m.
“If you think about it, there’s a big gap between engineering and the rest [of the workforce],” says Pampers.
The reason is that the vast majority of engineering jobs are in technology and manufacturing, while other jobs in the US tend to be in health and healthcare.
Mechanical engineering also has a large share of women, which is an issue for people who are choosing to pursue a career as a career engineer.
Mechanical engineer salaries The new study used the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to calculate median annual salaries for the three most common engineering jobs in America: industrial design, mechanical engineering, and software engineering.
The average salaries for these occupations in 2015 were $75,000, and the median was $85,000.
“The median salary for an engineer is more than $90,000,” says Robert B. Miller, a professor of engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.
“But the median is not necessarily the high end.”
Mechanical engineering has also grown by more than 10 per cent over the past decade.
The study also found that the median salary among engineers is now just over $60k, while the median for other types of engineering is $62,000 in 2015.
“As you start getting into the higher-end occupations, you’re going to start seeing a lot of variation,” says Miller.
“There’s a lot that’s been left out of the survey.”
The survey also revealed that the average engineering salary in 2015 was $81,000 for the five most common jobs, and $70k for the least common job, software engineering, or computer programming.
However, it noted that some occupations in the field were slightly higher than average, such as computer engineering and engineering management.
“This means that the middle class might actually be getting a lot richer than it’s going to be for a lot longer,” says Martin Kowalski, the head of global research at the consulting firm Gartner.
“So, the middle is going to continue to see an explosion in engineering salaries over the next few years.”
The number of engineers in America has increased by nearly 300 per cent in the past 10 years.
Mechanical design salaries Mechanical engineers have been growing faster than the average wage of their peers.
In 2015, engineers earned $75.3m on average, while their peers earned $57.5m.
However this trend has reversed in recent years, with engineers earning $61.9m on an average in 2016.
Mechanical Engineers were also more likely to have graduate degrees, as they tend to hold more technical and engineering degrees than the general population.
The median salary of a mechanical engineer was $83,000 last year, according the BLS.
In comparison, engineering students at public universities earned an average of $54,000 on an annual basis.
Mechanical Engineering is an interesting field in which there are still large gaps in salary, says Miller, who thinks that is because engineers are generally young and relatively inexperienced.
“What they’re doing is doing it very, very early in life, so they are really not really doing it as well as other people,” he says.
“That’s something that will be hard to bridge.”
Pappos says that this is likely to change as engineers become more professionalised.
“I think we’re going do a better job of bridging the gap between what engineers are actually making, and what the average salary is, and then we’ll start seeing some of the benefits come through,” he adds.
Mechanical Engineer Salary Trends and Trends in Engineering Jobs article Mechanical engineering jobs and salaries are not only changing, but they are also becoming more competitive.
“In the last 10 years, the salary has increased in every single job category,” says BLS research associate Daniel Hargreaves.
“Now it’s really competitive, which makes it very hard
